Side-Mount License Plate

After deciding to remove the stock license plate frame, I was lucky enough to hook up with an online Savage buddy who had this plate made for our bikes.  It's custom for the Savage and made from stainless steel.

To pass inspection in NY state, I had to get light to the license plate.  That was a learning experience but I pulled it off.

The plate was made with a spot for this light I picked up for 2 bucks.

This shot shows how it bolts to the rear axle bolt.

I learned how to solder!

... to make the connection from the light to a longer piece of wire to get power to the bulb.

After reading up, I learned that soldering would give me the best connection, given the location of this splice.

Soldering takes patience, that's for sure.  And I'm sure an experienced solderer would hurl at the site of my work, but hey.

I then used shrink tubing to wrap the connection.  I used "liquid electrical tape" on the ends for added seal.

I also soldered a bullet connector to the other end of the wire for easy connection into the wiring harness where the stock light was connected to.

I was able to zip-tie and route the only wire coming from the light to the wire harness connector.  I was able to get the wire under the front part of the rear fender and up under the seat.

Hint:  the light won't work unless it's bolted to a "ground".  The plate frame worked for me. The only wire that goes to the light is "hot" or + .  I didn't have it bolted together at first and couldn't figure out why it didn't work.

 Another learning experience!
